The month of June is being celebrated as the “Pride Month”, referring to the date of the StoneWall Riot in New York, on 28 June 1968, though it is observed on different days through out June by different communities. This year, a new Pride flag was designed by Valentino Vecchietti, to honour the pride month, which includes a new yellow triangle and purple circle to better represent the intersex community.

At the Home for Cooperation, we are working for a better society in Cyprus that is beyond any segregation based on origin, religion, ideology, language, gender, or sexual orientation. We take this opportunity to restate our firm commitment to continue working with the people of Cyprus to raise awareness on the issues we face everyday based on the abovementioned categorizations and overcome challenges together, as we have been doing for the last 10 years.

About Pride Month:

In 1968, the police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club in Greenwich Village, which resulted in a riot of bar patrons, staff, and neighbourhood residents. Pride Month is largely credited as being started by bisexual activist Brenda Howard. Known as ‘The Mother of Pride,’ Brenda organized Gay Pride Week and the Christopher Street Liberation Day Parade a year after the Stonewall Riots. This eventually morphed into what we now know as the New York City Pride March and was the catalyst for the formation of similar parades and marches across the world.
